30.10.2013

IMG_0981koopijaFor a third year in a row, on October 30, Silver surferscompetition was organised for grandparents and their grandchildren challenging their internet and computer use skills. Competing pairs consisted of a grandparent older than 55 and a grandchild younger than 13. The finals were held in the Public Library Kula within the cross border project Libraries for a new age.

IMG_1046 kopijaThis year for the first time the competition was international since it hosted 10 pairs from Serbia and Croatia who passed qualifications organised in their local libraries. Their task was to respond to 30 questions in online quiz using internet to search for information. The winners were granny Ana and her granddaughter Anita from Vinkovci, Croatia, who won a laptop computer.  The second prize, a digital camera, went to the hands of granny Zorica and her grandson Djordje from Bačka Palanka, Serbia.

IMG_1112 kopijaGrandparents together with their grandchildren had an opportunity to demonstrate their IT skills acquired through the courses organised in partner libraries within the project. The seniors attended e-skills trainings where they got introduced with the virtual space of the internet and the possibilities it offers. The competition encouraged friendships between library members in both countries. It also contributed to the promotion of intergenerational cooperation in raising the level of digital literacy among seniors who are among the most excluded when the use of IT technologies is concerned.

The competition is a part of the project Libraries for a new age implemented jointly by International Aid Network from Belgrade and the City library and Reading Room Vinkovci in partnership with the Public Library “Dr Đorđe Natošević” from Inđija , Public Library “Veljko Petrović” from Backa Palanka and the Public Library Kula from Serbia, as well as the City Library VukovarMunicipal Public Library Drenovci, City Library Županja, and the City Library and Reading Room Ilok from Croatia. The project is financed through the EU IPA cross-border programme Croatia-Serbia.
